Who am I? 

 

He progressed the tennis sport, an ambassador of his time 

He inspired us to play, he's the subject of this rhyme. 

 

He married Mary Benson in nineteen sixty-six 

Rick Laver was his son, just how fast the clock ticks! 

 

He's famous for his achievements that gave him a reputation 

Making content and excitement, he surely helped the nation. 

 

In nineteen ninety-eight, he suffered a stroke  

His body seemed to fail, completely revoke. 

 

He recovered over the years and got back to tennis 

To many players, he's a lord, or should I say a menace. 

 

He contributed to charity in twenty fourteen 

Playing tennis for a fundraiser, he is certainly keen! 

 

In his career of tennis, he's accomplished many things  

From tournaments to Grand Slams his achievements all sing. 

 

He has shown leadership by leading a team 

An all-rounder he is, as it may seem. 

 

Eagerly watching others, he continues his heroic life 

Peacefully spectating, along with his great wife. 

 

So who is this mysterious person who has so much flavour? 

Why of course it's the legendary Rod Laver!
